Tools/Video - Studio Build Information: Text Only

This is the call of the digital music producer. If you have been around for at least a few months on Internet based forums, this is what you will see.

But it is not to be taken at face value.

This statement does not mean that a fully developed isolated and treated room within a building is needed. It means how much and what kind of gear do I need to make professional sounding musical recordings, on a budget, hopefully less than (USD)$500.00.

I have seen some hacked up backrooms attached to storefronts that claimed to be recording studios. The sound was incredibly bad when played on monitors and did not get much better when listened to on headphones.

I have also seen big open rooms that had little in the way of purpose built treatment or much in the way of isolation from the outside world.

Some of the same gear existed in both rooms. Each owner had some of the same concerns.

Hours of operation headed the list. Seems that road noise from traffic, horns blowing, planes flying overhead, people talking at very loud levels (no doubt children coming home from school) and the always present neighbors found ways to get onto the recording.

Welcome to the year 2000!

People are living closer now then ever before. A lot of reasons for this. Real estate developers get parcels of land and design and build communities that are close to schools, super markets, work areas and the things that are most likely to get buyers interested.

This is not the fault of builders that rooms are not well suited for containing audio or stopping external sound from penetrating the walls of our homes. They have standards set in place that are easy to attain with standard building practice.

In the United States of America it is the sheetrock and wood framing wall that rules the typical residential structure. Commercial structures are metal studs and sheetrock. Sometimes wood framed and sheetrock.
